Bad Advice to Ignore
If you’ve asked on Reddit or in a Facebook group where to find size 12 shoes, you’ll have seen the same answer within minutes: try a thrift store. It doesn’t hold up.
Thrift stores draw from whatever’s donated — itself a subset of a retail market that has historically produced very little in extended sizes. They cannot have more size 12 shoes than the retail system originally made. What they have is a random, often worn, subset of an already-thin supply. The reason people recommend them is that thrift stores organise shoes by size — you walk straight to the size 12 section and immediately see everything in stock. That visibility feels like abundance. It isn’t.
Better secondhand options: Poshmark, Depop, and eBay are significantly better for secondhand extended-size shopping. All three aggregate national inventory, are filterable by size, and give you access to the entire country’s secondhand supply rather than whatever walked through your local Goodwill’s doors.
Shopping In Store
The key to efficient in-store shopping in extended sizes is finding retailers that merchandise shoes by size rather than by style. Most shoe floors arrange everything by silhouette — you see every colourway of every heel, then discover it doesn’t come in your size. A size-first layout means you walk straight to size 12 and see everything available at once.
Stores That Organise by Size
These off-price retailers all use a size-first floor layout, which makes extended-size shopping significantly more efficient.
Nordstrom Rack is our top in-store recommendation. Rack receives overstock from the full Nordstrom chain plus direct brand clearance, giving it the deepest concentration of extended-size inventory of any physical shoe retailer in the US. The shoe section is organised by size — walk to size 12, see everything in stock. Prices are discounted from retail, and the quality of what you’ll find here is consistently higher than other off-price options.
DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) uses the same size-first layout and carries a solid extended-size section. Selection varies by location, but most large DSW stores are worth a visit. Generally has slightly less extended-size depth than Rack, but more reliable stock turnover.
Macy’s Backstage is Macy’s off-price section, operating as a store-within-a-store in larger Macy’s locations or as standalone shops. Like Rack and DSW, shoes are organised by size on a discount floor. Stock is unpredictable but prices are low and the layout is in your favour.
Ross Dress for Less, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls all organise their shoe sections by size on discount racks. Selection is random and rotates constantly — worth checking when you’re passing, not worth a dedicated trip.
Burlington Coat Factory has a similar off-price shoe section organised by size, with a slightly stronger reputation among extended-size shoppers than the others in this tier, particularly for boots.
Target occasionally stocks size 12 in women’s footwear, though it’s unpredictable and rarely worth a dedicated trip. One exception worth knowing: some of Target’s own brands (A New Day, Universal Thread) extend to size 11 with a sizing that runs generous — if you’re a true size 11.5 to 12, you may find the 11 fits. This is only reliably true at that narrow size border, and availability varies by location.
Department Stores
These retailers use a traditional style-first floor layout, but have staff who can check stockroom availability across all sizes. If you prefer to sit down, try styles on properly, and have a sales associate do the size-hunting for you, this is the mode that works.
Nordstrom is the best-stocked full-price department store for extended sizes by a significant margin — more brands include size 12 here than at any other department store, and their sales staff are specifically trained to work across brands to find what you need. If you’re in a city with a Nordstrom, this is your best full-price in-person option.
Bloomingdale’s carries a meaningful extended-size selection, particularly at flagship and larger locations. Stronger in heels and occasion footwear than casual styles.
Macy’s main shoe floor stocks size 12 reliably across several brands, particularly Sam Edelman, Steve Madden, and Vince Camuto. Worth checking if you have a location nearby.
Saks Fifth Avenue stocks size 12 across their luxury and contemporary brands, including Stuart Weitzman and Vince Camuto. Coverage isn’t comprehensive but for premium extended-size heels, Saks is worth knowing.

Fit Notes
Proportioning matters more than the size number. Brands that size up as an afterthought often get the length right and miss width, toe box depth, and heel cup. Sam Edelman and Dolce Vita are consistently singled out by extended-size reviewers for getting this right.
Width is separate from size. Standard-width sizing at extended sizes still runs narrow for many feet. Sam Edelman, Vince Camuto, and Steve Madden all offer explicit wide-width (2E) options across their core range.
For boots, check shaft circumference. The most common fit failure in knee-highs and OTK boots is the shaft being too narrow to zip — not the length. Vince Camuto’s wide-calf programme is the most comprehensive in the market.
Steve Madden runs narrow — size up half a size if you’re between sizes or carry any width in the forefoot.
Size 12 heels are more stable than smaller heels, not less. A longer heel base has more contact surface underfoot. A size 12 block heel is physically more balanced than the same heel in a size 7.
